Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Repo car of dying relative

My husbands father moved out of the state and unknowing to us used our address as his new address.My father-in law owes a lot of money to a lot of different people.He is dying from cancer and has stop paying his bills.We do not have the best relationship with him but we do love him.My question is this:A car repo company came to our apartment tonight and asked if my husbands father was home.we told them that he did not live here.We do not lie so when they asked if we knew where the car was we replied yes however we did not give them the info.We were told that if we do not tell them where the car is we can be charged with a felony , is this true?Please help.Thank you!
