Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Spouse owes money

I was recently contact by my a collections agency that my husband owed money from a credit card dating back to 2002. When I told the man on the phone that this occurred before we married, he said well you need to be aware of community property laws and how this affects you then hung up. How does this affect me since we've only been married for a year and the debt occurred nearly 6 years ago? Will this affect my credit?

Re: Spouse owes money

If there is no judgment, you are not responsible. The statute of limitations has expired. You should not worry about this or having it affect your credit. You should consult with an attorney about whether there are FDCPA violations.
