Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I have a student loan account with Sallie Mae. The account is in default. It has been through at least three collection agencies. Each agency then adds their collection fees to my bill! I'm getting ready to settle the bill. So my question is; am I obligated to pay all these additional fees?

In short, yes. The credit agreement you signed obligates you to pay their fees and costs in connection with attempting to collect the debt. Because this is a federally-insured loan, they are not going to be very willing to negotiate down from what you owe - they have the ability to request insurance repayment from the federal government, then you will have uncle same chasing you down for this money.
