Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I had a surgery and other related services performed at a hospital in March of 2012. I received a multitude of medical bills from the hospital etc. My insurance paid some, and I paid some. I believed I had paid what was owed, and never received another bill after November of 2012. In May of 2015, the hospital stated that they had discovered via an audit, that I owe an additional $400, and they have sent my account to collections for not paying this. I requested and received a copy of the extensive original bill, but it is not easy to determine at this point, whether I owe the additional amount or not. Is there a statute of limitations that precludes them from damaging my credit for an amount that they neglected to bill for within a reasonable period of time?

There is, but it's a four-year limitations period. Also, that is only a limitation on collecting the money in court or using legal process to collect. Nothing precludes a creditor from truthfully reporting an unpaid bill even after they can no longer collect it. If it wasn't paid when owed, it is legal to report that to credit agencies at any time.
