In California, a debtor can exempt one motor vehicle from being levied upon to satisfy a judgment up to $2,550. If your car has no loan and it's worth $2,550 or less or if the equity in the car is $2,550 or less (if it's still financed and has a loan balance not less than $2,550 below the car's market value), then they will not go after the car. A credit card company usually do not go after just one car if they know you have no jobs and no other asset.
