i was assulted with a deadly weapon a week ago today, I was left a message in the hospital by a detective. I have left 2 messages and tried to call numerous times. They havent even taken a statement. Should I get a lawyer, is the investigation incompetent?

The only reason you would need or want an attorney is IF you know who the assailant is, and you want to sue for damages. Before any attorney would take such case, he would have to be convinced the defendant has sufficient assets and income to be able to collect from. If he has nothing, then nothing is what you would get from a lawsuit.
