Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Do attorneys ever take cases pro bono in exchange for a little notoriety? I am involved in a criminal case that has gotten quite a bit of media attention, but I am extremely poor.

They do, but . . .

Be careful that you're not getting what you pay for or that they are taking the case only for their own self-promotion and not to truly defend you.

Some attorneys will take a case pro bono and/or for reduced fees in the right situation. It doesn't hurt to ask, but don't expect that attorneys will be fighting to work on your case for free.

Only if YOU are a high profile person that would encourage other wealthy clients to come to the attorney. If you are poor, you are probably not, and no one is looking for poor clients to be referred or encouraged. Apply for the Public Defender.

Some attorneys will and some attorneys will not. It depends on the case and the circumstances. The movies will put situations together where an attorney will take a high profile case under such circumstances but in real life it is few and far between. However, it never hurts to ask. Generally the public defenders are the best bet under these type of circumstances.

Good luck

Of course if you are being tried in a criminal case which carries the possibility of jail time you are entitled to a free attorney from the public defender.
