when convicted of a felony, a person loses certain rights in addition to a prison sentence, what actual rights are taken away?

There are numerous ones. Some of the most important ones are the right to vote and the right to own a firearm.

As part of probation or parole there is usually a prohibition to travel out of state unless approved by parole officer or judge, as well.
