If you mean "Are family law attorneys allowed to handle criminal cases," then the answer is yes. If you mean "Are family law attorneys qualified to handle criminal cases," then the answer is that some are and some aren't. It depends on the attorney's background and the complexity of the case.

Note that calling someone a "family law attorney" means only that his or her practice includes a fair amount of family law. It does not mean they practice only in that one area, or that they lack expertise in other areas.

Any licensed attorney can handle any legal matter.

The question is - should they?

Although I am a licensed attorney, there is no way I would handle a family law matter. Why? I have zero experience in them. Each field of law has its own base of knowledge and experience...

It's like asking if a dermatologist could perform heart surgery. They're both doctors, right?
