The Public Defender is where to go if you can not afford an attorney and you are facing criminal charges. At your first court appearance let the Judge know you can not afford an attorney and the Judge will appoint the PD's office to the case. However, if you are talking about pro bono work in another area of law, you will need to search out legal organizations that offer low cost legal services or search out attorneys that provide pro bono services.
