Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

If a homeowner invites an old friend (whom the homeowner has not seen in over twenty-seven years, (but they were very good friends from the ages of ten, to seventeen)) into his home to spend-the-night, and that old friend steals several items belonging to the homeowner while the homeowner was sleeping (including two handguns (one handgun being registered to the homeowner)), what crimes were committed by the person who was invited into the homeowners home?

More information: The two handguns were in an unlocked metal box located in the garage of the homeowners home. The homeowner did not notice that those two handguns were stolen until eight years after the handguns were stolen, because the homeowner did not check that metal box until year 2011. The homeowner has not yet informed the police because the crime(s) happened approximately eight years ago. The old friend of the homeowner has not at all kept-in-touch with the homeowner. The homeowner had been wondering why that old friend had never kept-in-touch. Now (eight-years-later) the homeowner knows why that old friend has never kept-in-touch.

More information: The homeowner cannot locate his old friend via the internet. It appears that the old friend prefers not to be in contact with anyone.

More information: The metal box has not been touched by anyone in eight years, except by the homeowner. The homeowner checked that box (for the first time in eight years) after a bear had broken into the homeowners home and set-off the burglar alarm. The police chased the bear out of the house. The homeowner believes that his old friends fingerprints could very-well be on that metal box where the two handguns were stored.

What crime(s) were committed by the person who was invited into the homeowners home?
