Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

keyed car/vandalism

I keyed this guy (that i used to be acquaintances/friends with) 's car, but agreed to get it repaired. Am I allowed to get my own quotes to compare? or is my only option his ridiculously high one?

He wants $4000 for damages that are under $1000. Do I have the right to request a quote from another shop? He's threatening me with taking this to court and putting me in jail.

What would happen if we go court and how long would my sentence be?

It's so unfair!! He provoked the fight and kept attacking me; i repeatedly asked and then told him to stop but stil wouldn't leave me alone. Caused me so much unnecessary emotional distress. I have a history of both anxiety and depression disorders. I would've hurt myself, but stupidly decided last minute to take it out on his car instead.

You keyed somebody's car, and you're the victim?? Puhleeze. I've had my car keyed. You should be grateful I'm not a judge: I'd throw away the key, as it were.

Oh, so unfair. Either reach an agreement or get sued, or possibly arrested for the crime. Your lack of self control is not a defense in court. If he is actually trying to overcharge, hire an attorney to negotiate a settlement, rather than risk another emotional outburst and more trouble. He is entitled to have a good shop do the work, not a fly by night friend of yours.
