Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Landlord thinks I robbed them - I didn't

My landlords home was burglarized last month. I had nothing to do with the robbery. A week or so later, an aquaintance offered to sell me a fancy makeup case - I looked at it, but didn't buy it. I did, however, deliver one to another person - and now I find out that the cases were part of the property stolen. The person that showed me the cases has come forward to try to claim the $500 reward for info by saying that it was I who showed her the cases. I am related by a previous (bad) marriage to my landlord, and ours is not an easy relationship to begin with, so she is absolutely willing to believe that I am guilty. The police are investigating, and I know they can't prove I did it, because I didn't. But with my fingerprints all over the cases and this other person saying I sold them to her - I'm really worried. I watch cop shows and know they might build a case, and even if they don't, my landlord says I'll be evicted anyway. What should I do? To protect myself in case of them charging me, and from eviction?
