is it legal for police to enter a residence of someone who is not on probation or parole?

Not unless a resident of the home consents, they have a search warrant, or there is an emergency situation (cop claims to hear someone screaming for help). Do not ever consent to a search or open the door for the police. Make them kick the door down if that's what they're going to do. Discuss the above good advice with all members of your household.
