i live in england , we get legal aid here for criminal defense cases, is it possible to get it in california please ?

All American jurisdictions provide lawyers at public expense for defendants who cannot afford to hire lawyers directly. In most places these lawyers are government employees called public defenders. Some jurisdictions rely instead on private lawyers who work for the government on a contract basis.
