Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

A person on probation was accosted by the police and found to be under the influence and subsequently admitted to the possibility of there being drugs in her purse. And that the purse was located about a block away..on the pasanger seat of a friends car who was also being accosted by the same police and accused of being under the influence. despite being denied permission the police searched the vehicle, immediately locating the purse on the passenger seat removed it from the vehic searched and found the person void of any narcotics. then proceeded to search the rest of the vehicle. in an in descrip black bag located in the backseat . they found a brass knuckle knife. was this a legal search

I cannot answer the question without knowing whether the owner of the car was on probation .

I agree with Mr. Shapiro, but I would point out that the original person stopped does not have a legitimate expectation of privacy in someone else's car, and therefore might not have standing to object to the search in this particular context.
