What is the purpose of pretrial and why are there so many? Thank You

It could be for many different reasons including the defense attorney not being ready, DA not being ready, discovery not being ready, etc.
You should ask your attorney (if you have one) or your public defender. If you are an attorney it is not appropriate for you to post here.
