Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I was out on a walk and a lady was walking her German shepherd in the other direction. I scooted over as far as I could to the other side of the side walk but as I passed the dog bit me in my thigh. I had a pocket knife legal for open carry. Can I legally stab it?

First if you did nothing to provoke the dog you would have a claim against the owner of the German Shepard for damages. If you are attacked by a dog you can use reasonable force to defend yourself.
