Legal Question in DUI Law in California

My son got a DUI he is only24, never been in trouble but he missed up hit another person causing her to have several surgeys on her foot, he had great insurance he HAD a great job with Volcan had a class B lic, they took his lic of course told him to attebt AA classes, but still say he is looking at 3 to 6 years in state prision we are from a very small town since the accident he has been working at a new job(lost the Other) has done cumminity service on his own attended MAD on his own, can he get probabition since its his first offense, he has a public defender who really doesnt seem to be helping if he gets prision time can he appeal or couldn't he get house arrest since jailes are so full, He's always been goodis there a way for him to remain out of jail?

He could negotiate for a lesser sentence. If he is not satisfied with the Public Defender he should hire another attorney.
