Legal Question in DUI Law in California

I was involved in a car accident early 2008 and charged with a DUI. The individual I hit said he was ok and walked away with no visable injury. I did my time and was contacted by a law office asking for $6000 in damges. I paid it and was told that that was it and I wouldn't have to deal with the victim anymore. Now about a year later I went to court and the victim is asking for $70,000 I'm assuming for medical expences. I hadn't recieved anything in the mail saying that I'm being sued. I am being represented by the public defender. He does not have a lawyer as well. My question is what is the worse that can come of this? I make $12.40/hr and am not granted my 40hrs. I do not have any assests.
