Legal Question in Elder Law in California

What is the possible punishment for elder neglect in California? This is regarding an elderly person who lived alone and is a hoarder of animals and everything else. Their grown child was doing their food shopping for them but the elderly person did not have a working fridge and refused to go to the doctor, was not taking their meds, etc., but lied to their children about their health and the condition of their home. Now that person had a medical emergency, had to be taken by paramedics to the hospital, al and their adult child has been told they will be charged with neglect. Just wondering what might happen next?

You should contact the local office of Adult Protective Services. They get involved with abuse issues. They are qualified to assess the true facts in this case. This would possibly cover you should the elder, or another relative, want to charge YOU with any wrongdoing. Elder abuse is a major issue these days. There are many wrongful charges as well as cases where there is abuse with no charges ever made. This is serious, so you should get involved before someone knocks on your door.
