Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Adapting TV series for book

I want to adapt a TV series into a series of mini books. How do I go about obtaining rights to do so? Should I have a sample written to be in a good negotiating position?

Re: Adapting TV series for book

This will be a difficult proposition.

You will need to contact the producer of the TV show to obtain the book rights to the material. The TV show was likely written under the Writers Guild of America Agreement, so you'll have to determine who wrote each episode, and probably will need to obtain rights from each writer, too.

You may want to put together a SHORT writing sample (if you've never been published before), and present it to some publishers before going for the rights... a publisher has more clout in negotiations than you will.

Expect to share a LARGE chunk of your revenues with the TV producer, writers, etc. IF they even grant the permission.
