Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

film adaptation

I am an aspiring screewriter who has yet to have a produced script, but has won several contests. I have 2 novels that I cannot find the film rights information on. What is the process to go about of obtaining these rights? Must I find an agent first?

Re: film adaptation

Film rights are, in all likelihood, controlled by either the Author or the Publisher of the book. Start with the copyright holder, and work your way from there.

You don't need an agent for this, you probably DO need a lawyer to help draw up appropriate paperwork, and to deal with the rights holders' representatives.
