Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

How to find a job in sports law?

My husband is looking for a job in sports law, but is having a difficult time with his search. We would like to move back to California or somewhere back west, but are open to other locations. Any advice? Thanks.

Re: How to find a job in sports law?

I would recommend, if at all possible (this is assuming your husband is a lawyer with the CA license or is pursuing this....) that he does research and finds some lawyers in the category that he wants to work with and offers to work for them 3-6 months for free. THis is often a way to get a foot in the door, get some experience, which would make him more attractive, and may keep him on with this person or give him some momentum in pursuing paying work with others. I recommend this because it's really, really tough out here. Everybody wants to be a lawyer in California, and even moreso when it comes to entertainment and sports. Related, assuming you get out here and he gets a taste of this area of practice, don't be afraid to undertake some self-study and represent some of these types of clients on your own (at some point). Literally, sometimes you must take matters into your own hands. Interning with a solo practitioner doing the type of work he wants to do would allow him to help out someone that probably needs some help, get some experience, as well as an inside view on how to gain and service business as a solo prac or in a small firm. Good luck.
