Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Protected or not protected

I'm a screenwriter who's just completed an epic story based on the life of pre civil war revolutionary, John Brown.

The story, although semi biographical is an original work (i.e. original screenplay).

In terms of copyright, is it okay to register material based on centuries-old figures such as Brown. Am I protected under the First Amendment? And does ''public domain'' apply here? Please inform and thanks.

Re: Protected or not protected

Your original work is protected. I'm not sure what you mean by ''public domain,'' but your use of public source material is not a violation, unless you've quoted material verbatim. Good Luck.
