I have a 3 1/2 old son and his father is requesting to have him 50 percent of the time starting now. He wants to take him for a week at a time every other week. Is this is best interest of my son. I feel he is two young. I am not breastfeeding at this time
If both parents have suitable homes and the ability to care for the child, a child that young will definitely benefit from 50/50 custody. Children that young need frequent and continuing contact with both parents in order to develop optimally. At that age, however, a week at a time is almost longer than they can conceive of. Most professionals recommend some form of schedule that gives close to two days at a time alternating between parents at that age.
