Legal Question in Family Law in California

Divorce

Filed divorce papers 2 yrs ago (husband was in prison). Didn't get finished. Served him again last year, he never filed his answer. Now, he just served me with papers. Can I still go forward on the petition I filed with the proof of service and then default? Do I have to answer to his petition?
