Legal Question in Family Law in California

father's obligation to provide adequate living space for child

Shared custody of pre-teen daughter following divorce completed several years ago. Father lives in studio apartment and does not provide adequate sleeping/living space for daughter when she visits him, as apartment is intended really for one occupant only. Can mother force father to relocate to adequate residence that will permit reasonably comfortable visit and accommodation of daughter? (e.g. non-legal means, petition court for order compelling father to provide adequate accommodations for daughter, or, as last resort, petition court to get sole custody in favor of mother based on the aforementioned.) Thank you for any guidance/response you can provide.
