When one is filed against for divorce, is it necessary to respond with a lawyer in the same county as the plaintiff?

It is not necessary to respond with a lawyer at all. About half the divorces in Californa are done without lawyers. If you choose to use a lawyer, the lawyer can have their office anywhere as long as they are a licensed California lawyer. The response, however, needs to be filed in the county in which the petitioner (plaintiff) filed for divorce, because that is the court that has jurisdiction.
