Legal Question in Family Law in California

My girlfriend got me a cat as a present who has been living at my mom's house for over a year now. I believe the cat is registered under her name. We recently broke up and now she's threatening to take the cat back. This would be heart breaking. Is she allowed to take back custody or do I have a case that the cat should stay with me and my mother? Thanks for your help.

Interesting question. Not really a family law issue, although I have heard of custody arrangements in family court in a divorce case. Regardless, I would consider this as a gift and so the cat would be yours. Good luck!

This is a property issue as animals are considered to be personal property. It sounds like the cat is a gift and as such it's yours.

Good luck
