Am I liable

my child was taken from me at her birth in 1988. in 1989 or 1990 my parental rights were terminated, her legal guardian has had her ever since. i am being sued for child support starting april 2006. why now? am i responsible for paying child support even though i have no legal rights to this now 17 1/2 year old. also, can i file my answer to the court by mail?

You don't say why the child was never adopted but if this was a guardianship then you may be liable for support. If you received notice from Child Support Services you should call and speak to the case worker to see if you can find out what's going on. If the child has been emancipated or is going to graduate from high school or turn 18 soon then the support may be short lived anyway. You can respond by mail. You have someone else do the mailing and sign the proof of service. Mail a copy to the agency and the original and a copy to the court with a self addressed stamped envelope for the clerk to send you a copy back that shows that it was filed. If there is a hearing most courts have a way to call in but you need to set it up in advance.
