Legal Question in Family Law in California

I live in California. My husband just died after a long fight with cancer. He only had Medicare for his medical expenses. Am I liable for his unpaid medical expenses having not signed anything anywhere stating I would guarantee his bills be paid by myself? Thank you

You are not liable automatically. His estate, however, is liable. Medicare usually has what is known as an estate recovery unit. If you award or take a gift from his estate, without paying off Medicare, then you will become personally liable.

You should speak to an attorney familiar with probate and Medicare estate recoveries.
