Legal Question in Family Law in California

My mother and father have been married for decades and he has been abusive toward her since the beginning of their marriage. She wants a divorce, but he has repeatedly threatened to give away everything they own to a religious organization if he even suspects that she is thinking of leaving him. Everything is in his name (the house deed, the car titles, his retirement account, etc.) and she doesn't even have access to the paperwork. He keeps all of their financial records hidden from her, so she is not even sure what they own. She is a somewhat older woman and it would be difficult for her to start life over. In the event that he tries to give away their assets and leave them both broke, what legal steps can she take?

The first thing that she needs to do, is to retain a good attorney. We would be able to find out about the assets and income through the discovery process. If he is served before he tries to do anything with respect to the property, he would be in violation of the automatic restraining orders that would be in place with respect to property issues. She will just need to be able to come up with a retainer fee for an attorney to get started on her case.
