what happens if the respondent in a divorce (CA) refuses to respond to lawyers divorce papers.

The lawyer will move for a default judgment against respondent, which means the lawyer's client, the petitioner, will get everything or close to everything they ask for in the divorce. Basically, respondent loses the case.
