Legal Question in Family Law in California

Should I get a Restraining Order or File for Sole Custody. Or Both?
I have been the sole provider for my daughter and her mother left the country 2 years ago and hasn't seen her for those 2 years. I just received a Voicemail on my phone from her phone from a guy(a brother or dad?) that basically was a bunch of foul language and also threatened to kill me. Yes, he said ''When I find you, I'll kill you!'' What should I do? I want to be fair but also safe. My daughter is my number one priority and I want what is best for her, but also want to keep her safe.
