how many days do you need to serve papers by mail before court date

It depends on what kind of court date. Federal or state court? Civil motion, trial, summary judgment motion, or something else? Always endeavor to leave ample time for service -- better to serve too early than too late. Your attorney should be able to handle the matter in a timely fashion.
