Legal Question in Family Law in California

Spouses Rights

My Mother married a man in California 10 years ago. He has had one heart attack and is not taking measures to prevent another one. He has made his son his beneficiary on his savings/checking accounts as well as on the deed to the house and I think his life insurance policy. He indicated to my Mother that if he passes on, his son would write any checks if she needed money. My question is this....Does my Mom have any rights to any monies or properties should her husband of 10 years pass on? If not, what measures can she take to protect her financial future should her husband pass on?

Re: Spouses Rights

She is entitled to one half of the assets that were accumulated during the marriage. Anything the guy owned before the marriage is his separate property and he can do whatever he wants with it. thats the best I can do with the limited info you gave.
