Legal Question in Medical Leave in California

fmla for siblings

Why arent siblings considered immediately family members for the fmla? I have cancer and need my sisters help, she says she is denied (per her job) the time off because I am not considered immediate family. What other law is their for siblings similiar to this act?

Re: fmla for siblings

The state and federal lawmakers wrote the family leave laws to allow workers to take time off to care for seriously ill spouses, parents and children. Siblings were not included. Apparently, they had to draw the line somewhere. I know of no law that requires employers to provide family leave for siblings.

The only way to change the law is the traditional way. Ask your local legislators to sponsor legislation to amend the law to add siblings.
