if i had a miscarriage and called in sick, can my employer count it as unexcused absence?

You should advise the employer that you are requiring it to be treated as a medical leave under FMLA/CFRA. Get your doctor to provide verification to the employer. You are generally protected against 'retaliation' or 'discrimination' for taking such medical leave.
