If a document is served to you by overnight mail? Is there still five days extra time for mailing or just one?

Two if you appeared in the action previously. If you have never filed an appearance, the service is invalid.

Be careful. The manner of service doesn't always affect the timing. When it does, service by overnight delivery becomes effective two days later.

2 court days, but the estnsion does not apply to notices of intent to move for a new trial, notice of intent to vacate a judgment, or a notice of appeal. (Code of Civ. Proc., sect. 1013 subd. (c).)
