when answering a complain

does the word defendant ha gender ?

do we say

- the defendant for herself alone .. -

if the defendant is a female

It should read "Defendant, by and through her attorney.". Never draft your own answer to a complaint. If you can't afford an attorney for your case, and if you haven't called 20 attorneys you haven't tried hard enough, at least consult with one or pay him or her to draft your answer.
