How soon after the complaint is filed can I do a demand for production of documents?

You have to serve it, then it's twenty or thirty days.

I think my colleague misunderstood your question. You can serve the demand immediately, but wait the period he states before they produce the documents. Don't forget to answer the complaint within the 30 days of service, if in state court.
