Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

If I loaned a friend $500 and they signed a note stating the would pay me back in 1 months time, and it has now been two months, what previous cases or laws, if any, can I use to study and be familiar with as I prepare to take them to court? Is it even too soon to take them since its only a month since they were supposed to pay me back? This is in California.

Get into a law library and read everything you can about small claims. Make sure you are familiar with the statute of limitations (4 years for a written contract, which runs from the breach.)

Nolo Press has some good books on small claims, and the courts sometimes have a booklet on small claims cases as well. If you decide against small claims, you will need to look at costs and filing fees on a limited civil case, and have to decide what you want to do.
