Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I got mugged on someone elses property

The other night, I got mugged (for everything I've got) and injured on the property adjacent to the building I live in. I kind of know I'm up shits creek now but someone I know said that I might have a valid lawsuit against the owner of that property. Is that correct? Probably not but I thought it reasonable to ask anyway. I don't even know if I posted this in the right area!

1. Glad you are OK. 2. Co-counsel is correct. Unless there is something in the lot where you were mugged, odds are you do not have a suit. However, if thee is a security guard, or security gating or something that will show the land-owner knows the area is unsafe, then there is a possibility.

This really bugs me because I know the zip code, it's where I was raised. If you need assistance, we're in Pasadena. Our website is No-Probate.com (among others). I can be reached there or through the info provided by LawGuru.

Regards,

Scott

Property owners are generally not liable for crimes that others commit on their premises. There may be some unusual facts in your case that would make the owner liable, but nothing in your questions suggests that he is liable to you.

Sorry you were the victim of some low-life, but you probaly do not have a case. There is a State fund for Victims of Criminal Acts tha you can apply to for some compensation, but it is underfunded and slow in acting.

To flnd the property owner liable, normally you must show you were reasonably on his property, he was aware that it was an area of high crime, there were reasonable steps he could have taken to prevent crimes from occuring [flood lights in parking lot, secuirty gates for apartment houses, etc.], and there was some relationship between you [customer, etc.]. I agree with Mr. Hoffman that it does not seem you have a case.

It may not make you feel any better, but many muggers now are so heartless that they shoot or badly injury their victims and that fortunately did not happen to you.
