Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

In October 2012 my aunt kicked me out of her home in Los Angeles, but refused to let me take my dog with me. I am now with my mother in Washington state, and will be in my own place soon. I want my dog back. What do I do to start? Can a lawyer help me? Can someone represent me since I am now out of state? My aunt doesn't think I spent enough time with my dog while staying in her house, and I suspect it has something to do with her sibling rivalry with my mother, since she said she doesn't want Joy in my mom's house. I've had that dog for 11 years, and my mom helped care for her for 9 of those years, starting when I was 7 years old.

Your Aunt ".. refused to let me take my dog with me." Ok, well why did you not take it and can you prove the dog is yours, what is your evidence?

You can always hire a lawyer and pay a couple thousand to sue and try and get the dog back if it means that much to you. I'd estimate a retainer of $3K for this. It would be cheaper to get a new dog... otherwise some people really love their animals, choice is yours.
