Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

If someone stores a box of belongings in my garage and I am the victim of a third party crime in which that box as well as boxes of my own are stolen, am I responsible? I do have a police report and the claim I put into my Homeowner's Insurance. I was told that my insurance company will not pay for someone's belongings if they did not live in the house and not one if the insured. The insurance company did pay for my belongings.

You are only responsible to the other person if you were negligent. If you left the garage door unlocked or open in an area you know has some degree of thief, then you would be liable. your own insurance company is only going to insure what you own and not provide insurance for others. So the person who was storing the items is likely not going to be paid by anyone.
