Legal Question in Health Care Law in California

Doctor refuses to provide lab results

I called my doctor's office to see if I

needed to continue taking Vitamin B

and Niacin supplements. The staff

person said she'd check with the

doctor and get back to me. When

she called back, she said I had to

come in and see the doctor. On the

day of the appointment, the doctor

ordered bloodwork to test for Vitamin

B, niacin and pylori. Ten days later, I

called the doctor's office and asked

them to send me for a copy of

the results This same office person

insisted that I had to come back in to

see the doctor and pay for another

visit in order to get the results. I

complained that I was just in at the

doctor's request. She said the doctor

does not give out lab results over the

phone. The next day I called and

said I wanted a copy of my file so

that I could see the lab results. I

have seen this doctor only 3 times.

My file is just a few pages. Yet, I was

told I had to pay $30. I said I wasn't

going to pay that exorbitant fee just

to see one page. I've never had this

problem ever before where a doctor

refuses to give you a copy of lab

results. Am I indeed legally entitled

to a copy of my lab results without

having to pay for another doctor

visit?
