Legal Question in Health Care Law in California

Patient list

I have recently left a medical practice (I was a contracted physician) and took with me the schedule of my day to day activities with patients names, problem they saw me for and phone numbers. The practice is now threatening me, saying that I am violating HIPPA and I am concerned that I will be violating proprietary information if I try to contact these patients to join me in another practice. Should I return the list.

Re: Patient list

Yes doctor, you should return it immediately. In addition to civil liability for misappropriating their number one asset, you could face criminal penalties for theft as well as HIPPA violation.

I am note sure and would have to research it. You maybe have the right to contact them just to let them know where your new location is following certain protocol, or leave your new office information at the old office so that if they ask for you they can get in contact with you. I would have to look into details.
