Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Hi,

18 months ago I was approached by my sister-in-law, who had a friend that was looking to pay someone to marry her for money. I was hesitant at first, but later was in financial trouble and decided to go along with it. Now 18 months into the marriage, we have not gone thru with the interview process. I deeply regret my decision to break the law and knowingly marry for money. I would like to pay the money back that was originally given to me and end the marriage ASAP. My question is, If she decides to turn me in what will be the consequences? What can be done at this point to make this rite?

You should realize that both of you had committed a serious federal crime.

I doubt that a foreign spouse will be reporting you to anyone.

Please keep in mind that as a part of the immigration process, you were required to submit a legally binding Affidavit of Support, form I-864, which makes YOU financially responsible for this person, if she becomes a permanent resident (gets a green card). Your responsibility wouldn't end with divorce. The government can require YOU personally to reimburse for any federal means-tested benefits she will apply in the future.

Yes, you can divorce her, and if you want to report her, you can do so by contacting ICE and USCIS. Their contact information is available online.
