Is a person able to get papers for domestic violence?

Briefly, if you are married to a U.S. citizen, are or have been abused by that spouse, and can prove extreme hardship if you return to your home country, then you may qualify for a "greencard" under Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). However, VAWA applies to both battered male or female spouses (and children under the age of 25 who meet certain criteria).
